Buurtwinkels comes at a time when (real) shops are very much in the spotlight with the big IT companies anyway. Most makers of location-aware apps (such as Foursquare, Google Places, Facebook Places etc.) are currently trying to add value by making deals with shopkeepers, whereby people who ‘check in’ online are entitl to discounts, special offers or savings points. Neighborhood shops exhibition

From 25 March 2011 to 19 August 2011, Buurtwinkels will be on display as an exhibition. Not only in the museum but also in 2 annexes, in the Javastraat in Amsterdam-Oost and in the Van der Pekstraat in Amsterdam-Noord. A presentation will be made in existing shop spaces and an interactive space will be set up. At these locations, the neighbourhood will be actively involv in collecting objects and stories. In addition, the history of Amsterdam’s neighbourhood shops will be told by means of portraits in the shops themselves. The site ‘Buurtwinkels’ will be frozen in due course, when the project is complet, and add to the permanent collection.
