Column – The municipal council of Zeewolde recently made a decision about the construction of the Meta (Facebook) data center. Such an energy-guzzling, little economic value-adding gigacomplex is needed to store the ever-growing amount of social media data until the end of time. But does it fulfill a socially useful function?

For the most part, social media is used to

A post information that is not very relevant or meaningful and that is considered interesting by users. It is telegram data often information that is intended to strengthen self-image. And we assume that there are many people who find this information so important that they want to be able to refer back to it after months or even years. But let’s take a sober look at it. What part of all this data is still relevant after a month, or at most two months? And should this data be stored indefinitely?

The social media model currently looks like this, that posted information may not be lost to humanity. And because of that, an insatiable hunger for storage capacity has arisen. With the result that energy-guzzling complexes have to be placed somewhere, like for example in the polder near Zeewolde.

The social aversion to data centers

The social aversion to these types of complexes is not only understandable, but also completely justified.  twitter reinvents itself (at least it’s trying) You can’t blame the municipal council in Zeewolde for not understanding this. After all, what expertise do they bring to be able to make such a decision? That’s how it seems to work when the central government does not set limits to initiatives that exceed the competence of local governments. Do they think they can supply the energy required for the data center caseno email list comparable to the needs of half a million households, from their own resources in Zeewolde? And what about the other infrastructural facilities that are required to make the data center function?

Additional employment?
One of the most important arguments is the additional employment. Apart from the fact that this is very limited and the necessary personnel scarce, employment can also be achieved in other, more useful ways.
